MONEY (still) MATTERS

It's spring - time to start planning for improvement projects.

Remodeling magazine's 2010-11 Cost v. Value report indicates that in the northeast residential market - you still get a phenomenal return on your investment in a home improvement project. Where else can you make 50% on your dollar?  You also get a bonus:  personal enjoyment of that newly renovated kitchen or converted basement. Read on...

Happy Spring!

COST V. VALUE,
(now and in the future...)

Remodeling Magazine has been publishing Cost v. Value data for as long as we have been writing this newsletter.  This cycle's report shows that major remodeling projects, even when undertaken in a flat or depressed market, continue to be a smart investment. Most projects return 55-80 cents of each remodeling dollar spent.

Topping the list of value-added projects are exterior facelifts, such as window, door, and siding replacement.  Also good choices for high return-on-investment-at-resale are the ever-popular Major Kitchen Remodel, a Deck addition, and an Attic Bedroom or Basement Finishing project (no addition needed !!).

Architects can offer design costing and feasibility advice to homeowners before they take the plunge.  The key in remodeling is to integrate the new with the old to "create flow". Don't throw money away on a poorly designed renovation.  Consultation with an architect should not be considered an unnecessary expense. Rather, the short term expense of professional input can  save money in the long run. Together with your architect, decisions can be made for an addition or renovation that is in a style and location appropriate to your home, and that will provide the best return on your investment.
